Trails lead to Hin Tok Bridge and Konyu Cutting where a plaque commemorates the plight of Australian and British POW’s who undertook the hazardous work in precarious conditions at the aptly named pass. The memorial complex, Hin Lek Fai, honors the Allied Prisoners of War who died during construction of the railway.

Ban Kao

Thailand

Ban Kao is a village and tambon of Mueang Kanchanaburi District, in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. The tambon contains 15 villages. Ban Kao on the Kwai River is one of the most important excavation sites in Kanchanaburi province. Tools, skeletons, vessels, pottery and a Bronze Age burial site were found there with many on display in Bangkok’s National Museum. This will be an enjoyable adventure on your scenic Kwai River cruise through Thailand north of the capital Bangkok.

Bangkok

Thailand

The history of Bangkok dates at least back to the early 15th century, when it was a village on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, under the rule of Ayutthaya. Because of its strategic location near the mouth of the river, the town gradually grew. Bangkok initially served as a customs outpost with forts on both sides of the river, and became the site of a siege in 1688 in which the French were expelled from Siam. After the fall of Ayutthaya to the Burmese Empire in 1767, the newly declared King Taksin established his capital at the town, which became the base of the Thonburi Kingdom. With a population of over 8 million, Bangkok is the cultural and economic center of Thailand. The city is filled with historic and modern treasures to explore before heading to the countryside to start your Kwai River cruise.

Kanchanaburi

Thailand

In the late 18th century, the town of Kanchanaburi was established by King Rama I as a defensive post against possible Burmese attacks from the west in what is now Lat Ya Sub-district. In 1833, the town was moved about 10 miles to the southeast along the Kwai River to its present site during the reign of King Rama III. Kanchanaburi is the birthplace of the Buddhist monk Phrabhavanaviriyakhun. It is a short distance from the Buddhist temple Wat Tham Phu Wa which features a series of grotto shrines within a large limestone cave system. Each grotto features a statue of the Buddha at a different stage of his life. It is also the easiest access point to the nearby Tiger Temple and is also home to a Vipassana meditation center.

Sai Yok

Thailand

Sai Yok is a town along the River Kwai and is also a Thai National Park. Mammal species found in the park include elephant, gibbon, macaque species, Malayan porcupine, slow loris, serow, barking deer, sambar deer, wild boar and many more. It is thought there to be a small tiger population in the park as well. The scenery here features mountains, waterfalls and lush forests willed with wildlife and is a beautiful refuge for man and animals alike. Take in the scenery of the lush Kwai River Valley on a stop in Sai Yok.

Vachiralongkorn

Thailand

The Vachiralongkorn Dam, located at the mouth of the River Kwai, separates the Vachiralongkorn Lake as it enters the Kwai River flowing south. The Dam is the first hydroelectric Dam in Thailand and was started in 1979 and took five years to construct.  You can visit the Dam on a Kwai River cruise.
