The Chinese conquered the city of Thang-Long in 1408 and the Nguyen Dynasty gave the city its modern name of Ha Noi in 1831. In 1887 the French made Hanoi the capital of all French Indochina. It changed hands again in 1954, when it was ceded to Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh after almost a decade of fighting, and it became the capital of North Vietnam. Upon reunification in 1975, Hanoi became the capital of the entire country. In Hanoi it is a cultural norm to speak with strangers so expect some conversation as you explore this culturally and historically rich city.

A short side-trip down the Da River not far from the city suburbs of Hanoi lies a sleepy small town built around the Da River Dam – Hoa Binh. Hoa Binh, also the name of the province is home to a friendly and peaceful atmosphere and many of indigenous hill people of the area including the Hmong and Thai peoples. This area of Vietnam is popular with nature lovers and features national parks, hiking trails, cave complexes, and general scenery that is a stark difference from the nearby Hanoi.
