The history of St. Emilion dates back to prehistoric times. The St. Emilion region benefited from its location in the Dordogne River valley and on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela with many churches, monasteries and hospices built here from the 11th century. It was granted the special status of a ‘jurisdiction’ during the period of English rule in the 12th century. It is an exceptional landscape devoted almost entirely to vineyards and wine making, with many fine historic monuments in its towns and villages. Take in St. Emilion on your Bordeaux river cruise on the Dordogne River.
