A short drive west of Padua, Italy, founded in the 2nd century BC, lies Vicenza. This historic city prospered under Venetian rule from the early 15th to the 18th century. The architectural work of Andrea Palladio of the 16th century, based on a detailed study of classical Roman examples, gives Vicenza its unique skyline. Palladio’s city center buildings, as well as his nearby villas, scattered throughout the Veneto region, had particular influence on the development of Italian architecture. His work inspired a unique architectural style today known as Palladian, which expanded to England and other European countries, and eventually to North America.
