Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century. It has two very distinct areas that tourists learn well quickly – The Old Town, dominated by a medieval fortress; and the neoclassical New Town, whose development since the 18th century had wide influence on European urban planning. The unique but harmonious juxtaposition of these two contrasting historic areas, each with many important buildings and interesting architectural examples, is what gives Edinburgh its unique and Scottish character.
