Old & New Towns of Edinburgh

Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century. It has two very distinct areas that tourists learn well quickly – The Old Town, dominated by a medieval fortress; and the neoclassical New Town, whose development since the 18th century had wide influence on European urban planning. The unique but harmonious juxtaposition of these two contrasting historic areas, each with many important buildings and interesting architectural examples, is what gives Edinburgh its unique and Scottish character.

The Forth Bridge

This historic railway bridge that crosses the Forth estuary in the south of Scotland, once was famed for having the world’s longest spans of 1775 feet when it opened in 1890. It still remains one of the greatest cantilever trussed bridges today and continues to carry passengers and freight across its length. Its distinctive industrial aesthetic is innovative in style, materials and scale. The Forth Bridge marked an important milestone in bridge design and construction during the period when railways came to dominate long-distance land travel across Europe.

New Lanark

New Lanark is a quaint 18th century village that lies on the Scottish landscape where the philanthropist and Utopian idealist Robert Owen molded a model industrial community in the early 19th century. The imposing cotton mill buildings, the spacious and well-designed workers’ housing, and the dignified educational institute and school still testify to Owen’s humanism.
